WHAT QUALIFIES AS A "LEGALS ONLY" CEREMONY?
You might be surprised to learn that in a wedding ceremony, the legal element takes all of 5 minutes from legal wording to signing. So a Legals Only ceremony focuses on purely what is needed to legitimately get you married in the eyes of the law. You need two witnesses present, but beyond that the guests can be whomever you choose, however, it is best to advise them of the ceremony nature so it's not unexpectedly short.
WHAT ELSE NEEDS TO HAPPEN ASIDE FROM THE CEREMONY?
To become legally married, you will need to meet the requirements to be married, which include completing and lodging a Notice of Intended Marriage at least one calendar month prior to the ceremony. You will also be required to provide proof of place of birth and photo ID, and confirm that you are not currently married legally married to anyone including your intended spouse, you are both of marriable age, not in a prohibited relationship and there is no force or coercion upon the nuptials.
DO WE NEED TO PROVIDE OUR WITNESSES?
In a perfect world, yes. It is beneficial to have people who know you to act as your witness on the day. However, if you cannot provide people to be your witness we can ask anyone to observe and sign the dotted lines. I can also provide witnesses for a fee of $50.
WHERE CAN WE GET MARRIED?
Anywhere within Australia. Your loungeroom, your workplace, your favourite park, a beach, a pub, a theatre, or a restaurant. Name the place and I'll be there.
CAN YOU MARRY US IF WE ARE HAVING AN OVERSEAS WEDDING?
Yes, although only if the overseas wedding is not legally binding. Australia does recognise marriages which have taken place overseas, so long as the legal requirements to get married in that country were met. Yet, in some countries getting married legally is more complicated than it seems.
CAN YOU MARRY US IF WE ARE NOT AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS?
YES! So long as we can complete the legal process, a legal marriage can take place in Australia regardless of your citizenship. Although, keep in mind that some of the documents required to prove your marital status and/or personal identity may need to be translated into English.
